QB Report Card -Week 5

A look at how Jayden Daniels fared in Washington’s week 5 win against the Browns

The good

While he completed a modest 56% of his passes this week, Jayden Daniels made his 14 completions count.  He threw for 234 yards and a touchdown, while adding 82 rushing yards against good Cleveland defense.

The Browns were intent on keeping Daniels in the pocket while taking away the quick throws that he has been so good at this season and forcing him to his 2nd and 3rd reads under pressure. The strategy worked early on, but as the Browns’ defense wore down thanks to an inept offense, the throwing and running lanes began to open up.

Jayden hit on two beautiful deep shots today. The first was a scramble drill 65 yarder to Terry McLaurin and the second was a 41 yard dime to Dyami Brown for a touchdown.

The Browns did a nice job stopping Daniels on read options and designed runs but Jayden burned them on scrambles.

This should make future opponents wary of relying on man to man coverage.

The scrambling yards and his avoidance of big hits made this Daniels’ best rushing game of his young career.

The not so good

Daniels threw his second interception in as many games, thanks to a cleverly disguised zone coverage scheme and a great individual effort by Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. This will serve as a good learning experience in the film room.

An 80% completion rate wasn’t going to be  an every week occurrence. Still, Jayden had a few misses this week and put the ball in harm’s way more than we’ve seen up until now.

The verdict

This was the best defense Jayden Daniels has seen since Tampa in week one. The Browns prepared a solid game plan and made Daniels change up the way he played. This was another great test for Jayden and he once again passed.
